Originally founded by Swiss-German immigrant John Sutter in 1839, Sutter's Fort is Sacramento's oldest establishment, and the oldest restored fort in the United States. The fort is located east of downtown, near McKinley Park and the State Indian Museum, which offers a glimpse into Native American life in California. In 1848, James Marshall, a carpenter working for Sutter at his nearby Coloma sawmill, discovered gold and while Sutter tried to keep the discovery a secret, word got out and the 1849 California Gold Rush began.
