Recognized as a State Historic Park for its history dating back to the gold rush of the mid-1800s, Old Sacramento has been restored to a state that preserves its rustic feel, complete with cobblestone roads and preserved historical buildings. Dozens of unique gift shops and clothing stores sell their wares, along with restaurants and cafes offering everything from traditional fare to modern dinners. The historic district hosts special events year round and also holds a number of museums, including the California State Railroad Museum, the California Military Museum and the Discovery Museum History Center. Positioned along the Sacramento River, the district is just west of the Downtown Plaza mall and about a mile from the California State Capitol.
